Barbados-bound passenger found with cocaine in books

A Guyanese woman who was already processed for departure onboard a Caribbean Airlines flight to Barbados was yesterday intercepted with a quantity of cocaine compressed between the pages of books and photo albums.

Police in a statement last evening said that at about 7 am yesterday ranks of the police narcotics branch at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri intercepted the woman’s bags and found 1kg, 818 grammes of the narcotic concealed in books in her suitcase.

Stabroek News understands that the woman’s suitcase was pulled from among other bags and checked since intelligence suggested that she might have been carrying the substance. The source said the substance was actually hidden in the hard covers of the books and in the pages in the albums in small amounts.

This newspaper was also told that the woman was later questioned and then taken to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters at Eve Leary.

Police have confirmed that the woman is in custody and that she is expected to be charged shortly.
