Rose Hall centre gets sanitary block

Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud on Tuesday commissioned a sanitary block at the Rose Hall Community Centre.

A Government Informa-tion Agency (GINA) press release said Persaud, deputising for Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Kellawan Lall opened a sanitary block equipped with garbage receptacles to the community. Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha, the Urban Development Programme (UDP) acting Project Co-ordinator Frederick Harris, Interim Management Committee Chairman Bevan Sinclair and other officials also attended the opening.

GINA said this was a joint venture between the Rose Hall municipality and the Municipal Governance and Management Programme (MGMP). The MGMP is a programme organised by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, an association of municipal governments that is supporting the local government reform process. The programme emphasises municipal leadership, management, services, participatory governance, policy development and enabling institutions.

A road was also commissioned in the area under Phase Two of the UDP civil works plan. Persaud said central government is investing heavily in the infrastructure of towns as they rely on rates and taxes revenue and cannot afford the level of investment needed to meet the people’s needs. Under the UDP, the Rose Hall Market and Town Hall, several other streets and drains and bridges in the area were rehabilitated.

GINA said the UDP is a government initiative to improve infrastructure and basic services in the Rose Hall, Anna Regina, Linden, Georgetown, Corriverton and New Amsterdam municipalities. It is being executed at a cost of $4B.
