Animals depend on us to be considerate

Dear Editor,

As an overseas Guyanese visiting my homeland twice in the last six months, it is with grief that I see the everyday painful suffering and misery of street animals, especially dogs just fighting for daily survival.

It is evident that these poor souls have been abandoned by owners who deliberately throw them out on the streets like trash that have no feelings.

Well I say to these people, animals have feelings and vital organs and when they are in severe pain with broken limbs from injuries sustained by motorists they suffer in silence being voiceless.

Guyana’s extreme heat can be unbearable for people, and it has the same effect on animals that toil in the baking sun like the horse drawn carts and donkey carts carrying tons of weight for the livelihood of their owners. I see these owners whipping these exhausted animals for them to run faster with no compassion or mercy. The animals are punished by sheer ignorance that continues to prevail.

I ask all motorists before driving off in haste, to take a second and check underneath your vehicles for sleeping dogs who shelter from the burning sun. I have heard horrifying stories of dogs and cats being crushed by vehicular wheels.

My dear Guyanese, I beg you to please have a heart to consider and help these voiceless creatures that will protect, serve and love you unconditionally. They depend on us to treat them gently and kindly and in return, will sacrifice their lives for your safety and livelihood.

Yours faithfully,

Animal Activist
