Attempts to delay Berbice bridge should not be tolerated

Dear Editor,

One cannot help suspecting the motives of the main opposition PNC/Reform-1G in seeking to have the Berbice River Bridge project delayed until discussion of their motion for an investigation by the Economic Services Committee of the National Assembly.

This project is now in an advanced stage as funding was secured and the award to a contracting firm has already been made, as well as extensive and detailed plans for the relocation of houses in the path of the access roads, after much hard work by the government.

The bridge is scheduled for completion and to be in operation come 2008, bringing in its wake a great deal of development, comfort and convenience to citizens in Berbice as well as the rest of the country.

Just think of all the ease that will result to people who live in or have to go to and from Berbice, without having to depend on the crowded, slow and over-worked ferries.

The business sector will mushroom in Berbice and adjacent areas as a result of this bridge; so no attempts at delay should be tolerated.

Yours faithfully,

Jason Hinds
