Can GPL lower its rates as it must benefit from lower VAT prices

Dear Editor,

The government has continued to state that with the introduction of VAT, prices of zero-rated products should come down.

Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is a wholly owned State entity and, as far as the public is aware, got concessions on duties and consumption taxes.

I am sure, however, that many of the local purchases the entity made were subject to some form of taxes which were replaced by VAT including stationery, professional fees, spares and parts purchased locally or supplied through its contractors and possibly some of the fuel purchased from local gas stations.

Could the GPL now say why its prices have not come down? Or should GPL be compared to those whom the government calls unscrupulous – taking the benefit for itself.

Yours faithfully,
