Remembrance Day is a colonial hangover

Dear Editor,

It is noteworthy that on Sunday (Nov 11, 2007), President Jagdeo joined acting Prime Minister Clement Rohee, other government officials, members of the disciplined forces, the Scouts’ Association, the diplomatic corps and veteran soldiers in laying wreaths at the Remembrance Day monument site, the Cenotaph. Also, there was a Remembrance Day parade in Linden.

It is unfortunate to mention that our shackled colonial past has raised its ugly head once again!

A couple questions need to be asked:

How many Guyanese were involved (or killed) in the World Wars?

Has Guyana ever been involved in initiating any wars?

History tells us that wars are always initiated by the people who want to rule the world. They cry out for power and people dominance. Does Guyana have the capability or willpower to dominate the world?

When will the President who was elected by the Guyanese people begin to address the pressing needs of Guyanese rather than spending time on meaningless activities?

The destiny of our nation continues to be dictated by external powers abetted by our elected officials. Isn’t it time that this nonsense (or in Guyanese parlance, “stupidness”) be stopped?!

When will a Guyanese identity be defined and upheld? When will our leaders start to “think outside the box” and do things that make sense?

Similar to a baby crying out for the warm caress of its mother, glorious Guyana cries out for visionary leadership and direction.

Yours faithfully,

A Singh
