This trigger-happy minister must be called on to resign

Dear Editor,

The President is surrounded with advisors and selected officials who continue to embarrass him and the country. Firstly it was reported that his adviser Odinga Lumumba was involved in an accident where his driver was allegedly speeding, almost collided with labourers who were mixing cement on the roadway then lost control of the vehicle, thus causing it to end up in a trench on the East Coast road.

Secondly, a Minister of the Government was allegedly involved in a brawl where he aggressively confronted a private citizen who was in the company of his female friend. According to reports he attacked this person with a bottle and the victim allegedly defended himself and embarrassed the Minister. The Minister pursued the man and after knocking him down with his vehicle pulled out his firearm and fired several rounds in a threatening manner before leaving the scene.

Now the best part of this story is the that the police after receiving terrifying complaints from the public sent several messages to the Minister to present himself to the station. After reporting to the station the honourable Minister of the Government told the police that he doesn’t wish to pursue this matter.

This honourable minister committed several offences: he attacked someone, he knocked him down with his vehicle then he discharged his firearm putting the public at risk and he has the audacity to say the he doesn’t want to pursue the matter. This honourable minister should be locked up and charged then dismissed from the President’s cabinet, and endure the full force of the law just like any ordinary citizen.

We profess that we are living in a democratic society where transparency is paramount yet the identity of this honourable minister is unknown to the public. We only know that he was involved in a previous altercation with a firearm. We need to hold these public officials to higher standards, and they need to be accountable for their actions. There are our leaders and they need to set better examples.

The identity of this minister should be made public. Surely the PPP/C will not tolerate these kinds of shenanigans within their party. This minister should be expelled from the party and his post. There is no place for these kinds of stunts.

Yours faithfully,

Sydney Tait
