Dredging rivers to extract gold is very destructive

Dear Editor,

While obviously any foreign incursion onto Guyanese territory is totally unacceptable, I would mention that dredging rivers to extract gold is incredibly destructive.

Were I downstream from such a gold mining operation, I would do almost anything to stop it. It has been illegal in Canada for many years to use such methods to extract gold; only, however, after the total and near permanent destruction of some fine rivers in our Yukon territory.

We have regretted, in Canada, ever allowing such dredging operations, and they were in rivers as seemingly remote as yours.

Yours faithfully,

David Stevens
