Dear Editor,

I refer to a letter by Rudolph Mahadeo captioned “Cows being let loose to graze in New Diamond Housing Scheme (07.11.28).

Allow me to inform him that the Grove/Diamond Place N.D.C. on the East Bank Demerara can do nothing about the cows roaming the Diamond housing scheme.

From Crabwood Creek to Charity every road, housing scheme and town is a cow pasture, this is a problem that has to be handled at the national level. The law as I know it is that a cow should be branded when it is six weeks old and the police will have a list of the brand owners. When Moses Nagamotoo was a minister in the government he came to meet the people of Craig village E.B.D. and someone in the gathering mentioned the cow nuisance in the area and I said to tackle this nuisance the law of branding must be enforced.

When a cow owner knows that when his/her cow damages someone’s place or property that person can take the brand number and go to the police and the police take the necessary action the cow will be kept away from other people’s place.

Another thing, a cow can only be on the road when it is led with a rope and the leader is carrying a red flag-that is or was the law anyway. Driving through any one of those housing schemes is a danger at night. The cows lie in the middle of the road and since most of them are dark brown the driver will only see the animal when his vehicle is almost on the animal.

Yes, Rudolph, central government will have to take the necessary action to get cows and other animals back to the pasture.

Yours faithfully,

WP George
