Over the past few days we have been experiencing intense intermittent downpours causing water levels to rise in most regions. This rise is causing floods in some areas along the coast.

Climate change is a contributing factor to the type of weather that we are experiencing. Georgetown is also four to six feet under sea level and the majority of our drainage depends on gravity and tide. Any rise in sea levels can be critical to our coastlands.

The current rains will affect our agricultural sector, which is one of the largest sectors in our economy, hence all measures must be put in place to relieve the coast of large quantities of water.

I am happy to see that the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority are working tirelessly to help resolve this problem. Mobile pumps are set up in critical locations to help get rid of the excess water, regular visits are made by the engineers to ensure that all pumps are working, hotlines are set up within the ministry, and a lot more is happening to control the water levels.
