What plans do we have for climate change?

Dear Editor,

What has Shyam Nokta the chairman of the National Climate Change Committee done so far to show he is genuinely concerned with climate change.

He has been the chairman of this committee for the longest while, the world is marching towards self destruction and the government has not addressed the issue of what will happen when another major flooding happens, this time with the distinct possibility that there may be nowhere for the water to drain, meaning that the Atlantic will be higher than the seawall.

Talking about the seawall, why continue to destroy the solid concrete structure and replace it with boulders and sand? This rip rap design is a joke. Even if the government doesn’t have the money or the engineering capacity to rebuild the seawalls, why not place the boulders before the wall rather than destroying the wall and then placing the boulders? If one looks at the rip rap structure, one will see the waves moving those boulders.

I don’t see the government clearing any lands on the highway to be used as a refugee camp. Yep, in the future we may be refugees from the coastland. What are they doing about a new road to move the population off the coastland. The only road beside the Demerara river will be under water.

And don’t go saying you practice sustainable logging, when you don’t. Say you will, providing countries want to invest in Guyana, maintain its rainforests. And don’t go saying to the world you’re concerned about global warming when you can’t even tell your citizens what steps you are taking to deal with the problem. All the waterways, all over the country, continue to be clogged by garbage and debris, a truly horrible, sight. One wonders where the seat of government is.

Yours faithfully,

Ganesh Singh
