Dowlin in West Indies 30-man World Cup squad

Guyana’s Travis Dowlin has been included in the West Indies’ 30-man training squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007.

The squad was announced yesterday and includes present Guyana skipper Narsingh Deonarine and regular West Indies’ players Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan.

Dowlin gained the attention of the West Indies Cricket Board selectors by scoring an unbeaten 80 in last year’s inaugural Stanford Twenty20 tournament which carried a first prize of US$1m.

The 29-year-old Dowlin, who batted until he was forced to retire hurt after hitting 11 fours and a six in his undefeated knock of 80, was adjudged the Man of the Match in the Stanford final, an award which carried a cash prize of US$100,000.

His performances subsequently saw him gaining selection on the West Indies’ `A’ team which opposed Sri Lanka in the Caribbean in November for Unofficial test and One-Day matches.

The 23-year-old Deonarine, who has played four tests and four one-day internationals for the West Indies finally gets a recall after also playing very well in the Stanford twenty20 competition. His match-winning six in the final against Trinidad was worth US$25,000.
