President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Affeeze Khan is leading by example with his sponsorship of three of Guyana’s top amateur boxers who will be taking part in a tournament in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad today and tomorrow.

Defending their titles will be Dillon Allicock (Fly-weight), Darwin Garraway (Featherweight) and Clive Atwell (Bantamweight). They will be accompanied by manager Earland Rogers.

Khan said yesterday that in order to promote amateur boxing in Guyana, financial help and support was needed as most of the boxers are minors and do not have jobs to support their boxing careers.

He is therefore calling on the government to give as much financial support as possible.

Khan expressed his concern for the youths and stated in an interview with Stabroek Sport that the promotion of boxing will help to keep the children off the streets.

Meanwhile, the GABA will, tomorrow, kick-off its first boxing tournament for the year at the Andrew `Six Head’ Lewis Gym from 17:00 hrs. The tournament will be ongoing until March.

General Manager of Sterling Products Ramsay Alli, Paul Chan-A-Sue of Ansa McAl and Iain Cooper of Scotia Bank are the sponsors of the tournament.
