Bishop’s High School (BHS) successfully came from behind to knock off a very competent St. John’s College side 45-35 on Friday at the Burnham Court in a match of the Guyana Secondary Schools Basketball Association (GSSBA) league tournament, putting an end to an impressive three-game, win-streak in the process.

The St. John’s players had their heads in the clouds after two back-to-back upset wins against Tutorial Secondary and St. Rose’s High School, and they may have contemplated making it upset number three after Denis Horatio helped them into an early 5-0 lead.

Although not a very skilled basketball player, Horatio used his superb conditioning gained from distance running to out run the Bishop’s High School players on both sides of the court.

Horatio scored nine first half points and created an awesome defensive presence for his side, so much so that BHS could not even score one shot from behind the arc.

As a result, they trailed St John’s 12-17 at half-time but seemed to be getting it together, cutting down on turnovers towards the end of the half.

In the second half, however, the St John’s guard did not cover the last man back on defense which led to many easy fast break points, most of which were converted by Ashton Parris who finished with a game-high 18 points and five assists.

Pretty soon the Bishop’s offense was ignited and shooting guard Tesrick Rambisson, hooked up with the bottom of the net on multiple attempts from three-point range.

St John’s point-guard Keith Tute, tried to take over the game as time wound down, but although he was successful on a few penetration, had he been just a bit more unselfish, his team might have been able to shoot their way back into the game.

BHS never looked back as they kept scoring at a more consistent rate than their opponents and eventually won by 10 points.

Rambissoon ended the game with 12 points, two assists and two steals while Horatio, who top -scored for St John’s, ended with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals followed by team-mate Tute, who registered 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Earlier in the afternoon, Brickdam Secondary administered a 33-point thrashing on Alleyne’s High school, with the game final score being 43-10.

Alleyne’s High’s top scorer, Jamal Vigilance could only manage three points in the entire game.

Roderick Grant of Brickdam Secondary scored 16 points, two assists and two steals, while teammate Jonathon Wright chipped in with nine points.

In the Linden division of the GSSBA, Linden Technical Institute registered a 55-21 victory over the Linden Foundation Secondary last Tuesday.

Orin Rose led all scores in the game as he scored 19 points, four rebounds and four steals for LTI while his teammate Jason Braithwaite scored 12 points and registered three rebounds, three rebounds, two assists and four steals in the process.

In the other Linden game, New Silver City Secondary was narrowly defeated by Christianburg Secondary 30-33. Kevin Sullivan with 12 points and four rebounds was the top-scorer for the winners while Trimin Thomas of New Silver City scored 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.
