Attorney-at-Law Anil Nandalall was elected president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) yesterday and immediately promised to provide a tennis table in every school and resuscitate the national senior championships during his term in office.

In a fiercely-contested vote for the presidency, Nandalall defeated Harold Hopkinson by 42 votes to 17 at the GTTA’s Annual General Meeting at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Nandalall, in his acceptance speech, disclosed that he already had a commitment of 25 tables from a source.

“I will work assiduously to ensure that there is a tennis table in every school throughout the length and breadth of this country, but we will target secondary first,” Nandalall said.

According to the newly-elected president, he had already approached the National Sports Commission (NSC) and would be working closely with other agencies to get them to throw their weight behind the National Senior championships which has not been held for the past five years. Ramsey Alli was elected senior vice president while Arron Fraser will serve as junior vice president.

Godfrey Munroe was returned unopposed as general secretary, while Joel Wilburg will serve as treasurer.

The assistant secretaries are Hopkinson and Linden Johnson.

Sixteen members were nominated to serve on the executive and district committees.

Hokinson was also named to serve as Development Officer and Deidre Edghill as Marketing Officer.

General Secretary Munroe said that the GTTA was able to accomplish tremendous achievements despite operating in adverse conditions.
