Demerara easily won the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Inter-County Twenty20 competition with a five-wicket victory over defending champions Berbice at the National Stadium, Providence, yesterday.

Led by man-of-the-match Dion Ferrier’s bowling effort (4-19), Demerara were able to reduce the Ancient County team to 103-9 from their allotted overs as only the explosive opener, Maxie De Jonge, with 38 from 30 balls including one four and one six, and national opener Royston Crandon with a run-a-ball 23 also with one six and one four offered resistance to Ferrier, who ran through the Berbice middle-order with the ease of a knife going through butter.

Former national all-rounder Damodar Daesrath and national off-spinner Imran Jafferally with 11 each, offered support to De Jonge and Crandon.

Zaheer Mohammed (2-21), Neil Mc Garrell (1-16) and Chris Barnwell (1-22) lent support to Ferrier.

In reply, Demerara reached 104-5 from 18.3 overs with Lennox Cush scoring 29 from 33 balls with three fours.

Zaheer Mohammed chipped in with an unbeaten 22 from 24 balls while former Guyana and West Indies under -19 captain Leon Johnson scored 16 from 23 balls.

National fast bowler Jeremy Gordon took 2-20 whilst Imran Jafferally (1-16) and Esaun Crandon (1-22) offered support.

Ferrier received a trophy for being adjudged the man-of-the-match whilst Dowlin received a trophy and $100,000.00 for his team’s victorious efforts.

Earlier, Berbice defeated Essequibo by eight wickets to advance to the final. Sent in, Essequibo were held to 118-6 from their allotted overs.

Wayne Osborne, led the batting with an unbeaten 35 whilst Yogeshwar Lall contributed 28.

National right arm-leg spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo took 2-16 and received support from E. Crandon 1-15 and Jafferally 1-34.

In reply, Berbice made 119-2 from 18.2 overs.

Their openers De Jonge 45, ( 4x4s; 2x6s, 30 balls) and Sewnarine Chattergoon 29* (1×4; 47 balls) posted 68 runs for the first wicket off 9.5 overs.

Royston Crandon made a breezy 20 from 15 balls with two fours to help set up the comfortable win for Berbice.

Left-arm orthodox bowler Robert Moore and the veteran Ramesh Narine took a wicket each for 10 and 22 runs respectively.
