The East Ruimveldt man who was allegedly shot dead by a policeman outside a nightspot took four gunshots including one to his head, a post-mortem report yesterday revealed.

Clifton Garraway of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme was killed during a scuffle with the cop on Sunday night at a bar on Garnett Street, Newtown, Kitty.

Relatives of the dead man said that the autopsy was performed yesterday. They said that police have since informed them that they will wrap up their investigations by tomorrow. Garraway will be laid to rest on Monday.

The policeman who said he shot himself while being attacked by Garraway has been moved from the Georgetown Hospital to the Brickdam Police Stations lock-ups. The policeman is also the driver of the Minister of Home Affairs.

Police had said in a statement that the minister’s driver was not on duty and the shooting followed a scuffle between him and Garraway. The statement said the police rank had been issued with a handgun by the force, and also had a licence for a personal weapon. The reason why the police firearm had not been lodged on completion of duty, as is standard procedure, is not yet known, the police statement added.

Relatives said that Garraway had bumped into the policeman’s girlfriend at the bar and the woman became annoyed and reported the matter. The policeman confronted Garraway, pushed him onto the ground and then allegedly shot him four times. The post-mortem revealed that Garraway was shot in his head, neck, side and groin.
