A Tiger Bay man accusing of breaking and entering Guyana Stores and carting off $3.1 million in items made a court appearance yesterday.

Odinga Edwards of 2 ‘A’ Queen Street, Tiger Bay appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan and was remanded to prison. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny.

Particulars of the charge read that between March 10 and 12 Edwards allegedly broke into the store and stole a quantity of DVD players, portable CD players, clothing, sporting equipment, colognes and footwear totalling $3,103,718.

Police said that several of the missing items were recovered at Edwards’ home among which were a DVD player and a pair of sneakers.

In a bail application yesterday Edwards’ attorney, Frank Fraser said his client is gainfully employed and he had no knowledge of the offence.

But prosecutor Sherwin Matthews objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant was charged before with a similar offence. He said the information the police received is that Edwards is not employed.

Within the last year there have been over 15 incidents of break and enter and larceny at the Guyana Stores complex.

The matter comes up again on March 23.
