Speeding claimed yet another life on one of the country’s roadways, this time that of a 40-year-old man of Nurney Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

Dead is Tyrone Henry also known as ‘Iguana Man’ who was on his way home in a car around midnight on Saturday after drinking with five friends not far from his home.

The man’s wife Jacqueline told Stabroek News that she arrived on the scene about 10 minutes after the accident and observed her husband stretched out in the vehicle with his neck and face swollen. The woman said other than that she had seen no other injuries, adding that there was “not even a drop of blood.”

She said a female occupant of the car told her that just before the accident she had cautioned the driver to slow down because he was driving too fast. But before the driver could respond to the woman’s warning he had slammed into a parked trailer on the side of the road, which caused the car to spin around before coming to a halt. The driver then fled the scene and residents in the area assisted the occupants out of the vehicle.

The woman said that after she arrived she rushed her husband to the Port Mourant Hospital but was refused entry to the compound by the guard at the gate who told her that the institution had a power outage and the doctor would not be able to look at the man.

After failing to get attention at the hospital, the family tried the Port Mourant Dispensary to no avail, following which they travelled to the New Amsterdam Hospital where they arrived at 1 am, and when their relative was pronounced dead on arrival.

Henry, who was a farmer, has left a wife and three children to mourn his death.
