Sonia Noel brings Xmas cheer for single parent homes

Designer Sonia Noel has barely had time to breathe since the inaugural Guyana Fashion Weekend, but she is pushing back commitments and declining invitations to be in Guyana next weekend for a charity fashion show.

Style Mission 2007 is Sonia’s latest charity show, but unlike previous years when she raised money for a particular charity, the aim this year is to start a single parent fund that will assist struggling single mothers across the country.

With Christmas approaching, the show is also aiming to raise funds for food hampers, toys and clothing to be distributed before December 25. A team from Sonia’s camp is expected to work with the Ministry of Human Services’ Welfare Division to identify persons in need.

The show is set to be staged at the Umana Yana on December 9 and kicks off at 7 pm.

In recent interview with The Scene, Sonia said this particular show is close to her heart because she grew up with a single mother and also raised her two girls as a single parent.

“I know the hardships and how difficult it can be at times, so I am hoping this comes off successfully and we are able to assist people. This is something I have been thinking about for a while now, and it is finally happening,” the designer said.

She said they are also planning to purchase a few school items for children and are hoping to provide special lunches and dinners. According to Sonia, the project is likely to really take off over the next few months, but the show is where it will be launched. Minister of Human Services, Priya Manickchand is the patron of the charity show.

For many years, Sonia has been involved in charity shows and in more recent years has focused on Joshua House. She has also been involved in senior citizens Christmas parties in Guyana and Suriname.

The designer also collaborated with the British High Commission on a charity show for children living with disabilities – an event she said changed the way she viewed fashion and its potential in areas apart from the catwalk.

Designs from Sonia’s label, ‘Mariska’s Design’ will be featured at the show in addition to the work of a few other designers from the Guyana Fashion Weekend. A Dutch auction will be held at this event. Tickets cost $2,500 and they can be had at Nigel’s Supermarket, Clairans, Giddings & Krystal Kiddies Corner.
