President of the Guyana Public Service Union, Patrick Yarde has written President Bharrat Jagdeo calling for the reinstatement of the Agency Shop Agreement which he said had been discussed previously with the administration.

Since its 17th Biennial Delegates Conference which was held during the period June 7-8, 2007 Yarde said the Executive Council of the union had called for the reinstatement of the agreement which had been entered into between the government and the union in 1976.

The GPSU president said in a press release issued yesterday that Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Baldwin Spencer had argued strongly in favour of agency shop agreements and their merit in the industrial relations arena when he spoke at the 5th Triennial Conference in October 2007.

Yarde added that the union had previously met with Jagdeo and then Public Service Minister Jennifer Westford and the President had expressed his willingness to have the situation rectified by the reinstatement of the agreement.
