House-to-house registration starts with GECOM staff

Countrywide house-to-house registration got underway yesterday and is expected to continue over the next six months in preparation for local government elections.

The Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) 300 staff members were set to be registered yesterday and the actual house-to-house exercise is to start this afternoon, this newspaper was told yesterday.

A GINA press release issued last night said the GECOM workers assigned to conduct the registration process would be accompanied by two scutineers, one from the PNCR and the other from the PPP/C.

GECOM Chairman, Dr Steve Surujbally told GINA that the most important objective at this time was getting the registration completed properly since the process would determine the claims and objections period, which follows the establishment of the National Register and Database.

Surujbally said the workers were very professional and the process was very clear and precise when the first exercise yesterday was conducted at his house. Further, he encouraged the workers to exhibit patience and to get the work done expeditiously and professionally; adding that some teething problems were likely given that not every person in every household would be accommodating.
