City urges property owners to pay taxes

The Mayor and City Council is urging property owners to settle their outstanding tax accounts this month.

In a press release the Council said no interest will be added to the accounts if they are paid in the first month every year. It said that property owners who are encountering difficulties paying the entire sum at one time can make use of the arrangements it has put in place to facilitate quarterly payments. These can be made on the first day of January, April, July and October.

The Council also advises persons who may have large sums outstanding because of the accumulation of rates over a number of years, to make contact with the city treasurer to initiate payments. Failure to resolve any problem related to the payment of rates may result in legal action being taken against the defaulter.

Meanwhile, the Council said it would initiate the Parate Execution Law, to recover outstanding taxes owed by property owners.

This would allow both moveable and immoveable property belonging to the defaulter to be sold.
