FAO officer to help with new weed control plan

A Weed and Plant Protection Officer from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) unit is expected to support the agriculture ministry’s efforts to clear weeds from drainage canals by assessing and designing a control programme.

A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said Ricardo Labrada Romero on Wednesday met with Minister Robert Persaud and Director of the National Agricultural Research Institute Oudho Homenauth for discussions.

Romero is tasked with tackling, among other things, the antelope grass which the minister said has cost the government more than $700M to clear from drains and canals. He said too, “When the project gets off I do hope that it will aid in that effort of better water management and also at the same time, we can look at other problems we encounter not only in canals but in other areas
