$43.36M contract signed for Moblissa Water System

The Linden Economic Advancement Programme (LEAP) and Andrew Webb Drilling signed a $43.36M contract yesterday for the construction of the Moblissa Water System.

The contract was inked at a simple ceremony hosted at the LEAP business centre. LEAP Programme Manager Kathleen Whalen said “This initiative will see the construction of four six-inch diameter wells with accompanying pipe works and solar pumps, rehabilitation of existing well and well facilities within the former LIDCO compound and the construction of a perimeter fence around each well compound.” Farmers will benefit from improved water supply and new farming techniques will be introduced at a demonstration farm in the area.

In September 2006, LEAP commissioned a study to investigate the feasibility of constructing a water supply system in Moblissa. This study was a direct result of the findings of the 2005 Regional Assessment of Food Security, Agricultural Production and Food Consumption by Vokaty and Associates, which indicated that the community had great potential for large-scale agriculture production, but that the area suffers from inadequate water supply. The project is expected to generate employment, reduce poverty and improve food security. There is every indication too that the community is committed to the project.

On completion of the water system, the project will be managed and owned by the Moblissa Water Users Association on behalf of the community.

Moblissa is located about six miles from Linden and stretches about six miles off the highway.
