The human services ministry on Thursday launched a social welfare group in Sophia that is mandated to raise the living standards of all women.

The ‘Mothers’ Committee on Social Issues’ was launched in Sophia through the Women’s Affairs Bureau (WAB), a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. Its founder is Anetha Shelto.

The group was initiated last year and has attracted women from Buxton, Melanie, Victoria and Mocha. Eighty women currently participate in the group’s activities. Fifteen mothers are currently undergoing cake decorating courses the group has sponsored. Shelto said before the end of the year at least one child from each participant will be computer literate.

WAB Administrator, Haymawattie Lagan, said she is happy that women are cooperating to improve their living standards and build their communities. She also pledged the WAB’s assistance to the committee.

According to GINA the group is also aiming to “stamp out” abuse of children, vulgar music in public transportation and implement strategies for idle youths in the society.

The release said Founder of the Kids First Fund Varshnie Jagdeo and PNCR MP Volda Lawrence also attended the opening ceremony.
