A pensioner and a coconut vendor who were involved in an altercation last week were yesterday placed on $50,000 and $35,000 bail respectively when they appeared before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Mohammed Bacchus, 58, and Kenny Mahadeo, 23, faced charges of assault causing unlawful wounding and assault and indecent exposure of person in a public place respectively.

Bacchus, a pensioner, of 26 Hill Street Albouystown is accused of wounding Mahadeo on the left hand. The wound required 13 stitches. Bacchus pleaded guilty to the charge, saying he was aggravated by Mahadeo, who verbally abused his mother and exposed his private parts to her last Wednesday. He said that Mahadeo also hit him with a piece of wood taken from a horse cart.

Mahadeo, a coconut vendor, of 94 La Penitence Street, on the other hand pleaded not guilty to both of his charges. He said he was visiting his friends next door to Bacchus when Bacchus verbally abused him. He said he answered Bacchus, who retaliated by chopping him with a cutlass. Mahadeo said he never exposed himself in an indecent manner. He said he was drinking with his friends when Bacchus went home drunk and started throwing insults at him. He told the court that he would never behave that way towards Bacchus’s mother since he grew up around her and knew her practically all his life.

Bacchus was placed on $50,000 bail, while Mahadeo was placed on $35,000 bail, $25,000 for assault and $10,000 for indecent exposure.

The case is set to be called on February 8 at Court Six.
