Drunk fined over food items that ‘appeared’ at his home

A drunk, who stole food items worth $8,000 from a friend’s home, was yesterday fined $20,000 with the alternative of 12 months in prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Khemchand Roy, 29, of Meten-Meer-Zorg Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara, first denied stealing the items, then pleaded guilty before Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Roy stole 29 packets of plantain chips, 17 egg balls, fried channa, four pumpkins and a quantity of bora and okra valued $8,000.

Much to the amusement of the court, Roy said he went to the home of Kalowtie Sankumar on January 20 and consumed alcohol to the extent that he became drunk. When he returned home, he said, the items “appeared” at his house and he did not know how they could have gotten there.

“The people call me by them and beat me then the police pick me up,” Roy said. When asked by the magistrate whether he had told the police that he had not stolen the items, Roy replied, “Dem nah listen to me”.

He then humorously told the court that he was drunk and maybe, “I tek the things.”
