A Guyanese man was on Thursday remanded to prison in Trinidad after he was charged with trafficking in some 1.7 kilos of cocaine, a report in the Trinidadian Guardian said yesterday.

According to the report Dirk Innis, who lives in Toronto, Canada, was arrested by members of the country’s Organised Crime Narcotics and Firearms Bureau (OCNFB) on Wednesday at the Piarco Airport.

Innis was remanded by Senior Magistrate Debra Quintyne and the report said that the street value of the cocaine is estimated to be TT$700,000.

The man, who was described as a welder and delivery man, was arrested during an OCNFB exercise at the airport around 4 pm on Wednesday when they stopped and searched him while he was carrying a travel bag and suitcase.

The officers said they searched the bag and suitcase and found several packages of cocaine hidden in the inner lining of the luggage.

Innis was questioned and later charged. He is to return to court on February 1.

The report did not say from which country Innis was travelling or what his destination was.
