Lusignan residents took to the streets again yesterday blocking the East Coast Demerara public road in protest at Saturday’s massacre and in a sign of the tension on the coast some Coldingen residents packed their bags and fled their homes after reports of strange men in the area.

The army and police last evening had established a heavy presence there.

Yesterday’s situation was much the same as the previous day, though on a much smaller scale as Lusignan residents blocked two parts of the East Coast Highway with burning wood and tires and a huge pile of sand and other debris. Traffic had to be diverted and was directed through the Railway Embankment.

Following the murders of 11 Lusignan villagers, residents had come out in protest at the brutal slayings.

When Stabroek News visited the area yesterday afternoon, tension and emotions ran high and residents taunted police and soldiers who stayed impassively in their parked vehicles.
