The sixth Secondary Schools Drama Festival is billed for April this year at the Theatre Guild Playhouse which is now undergoing extensive renovations.

According to a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) the event is open to all secondary schools, including those from the private sector and will present an opportunity for students to showcase their talents at Guyana’s hosting of CARIFESTA X in August.

The festival is held every two years under the aegis of the Ministry of Education.

The festival over the years has helped many youths to realise their talent in the allied arts. According to the Administrator of the Unit of Allied Arts of the ministry, Desiree Wyles-Ogle, this year’s event will include performances based on myths, legends, storytelling and social issues in society. She noted that myths and legends associated with Guyanese culture will play a focal part in the performances, since the winners are expected to take part in CARIFESTA X.

Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr. Desrey Fox has already spoken to a number of secondary schools across the country. She explained that the Playhouse, which is at present being restored to its original glory, is an ideal venue for the event since it is an arena which supports performances in schools and boosts academic learning.

Dramatic Performances has been added to the Caribbean Secondary Education Council’s (CSEC) curriculum with the Berbice Multilateral School being the first beneficiary, performing well at the CSEC.

The fifth drama festival was held in 2006 with North Georgetown Secon-dary emerging the winner.
