Foreigners held in Essequibo with cocaine

Police yesterday morning confiscated a little over 4 kgs of cocaine when they stopped and searched a car at Aurora public road on the Essequibo Coast with four African nationals who are said to be in the country illegally.

The foreigners and the driver are in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be charged shortly.

A source told Stabroek News last evening that around 7:30 am ranks stopped a hire car on the public road and carried out a search on all of the occupants.

A bag which was being carried by one of the nationals was searched and the cocaine was found inside, the source said.

This newspaper was told that the five men were arrested and subsequently transported to police headquarters in the city to further assist the police with their investigations.

A police release last night said that the Africans are from Guinea, Swaziland, Nigeria and Kenya.
