An Amerindian village will be recreated at the Sophia Exhibition Complex to give Carifesta patrons an opportunity to experience the lifestyle and culture of local indigenous peoples.

According to a Govern-ment Information Agency (GINA) press release, nine Amerindian tribes will dwell in the village during the festival. Amerindian Affairs minister Carolyn Rodrigues “is heading a committee with a detailed plan to showcase the indigenous culture” for the event. The plan includes erecting eight buildings each housing a tribe. Some of the tribes will be housed in the same location because of the similarities of their houses. Rodrigues explained that the Caribs and Waraus’s houses are similar whereas the Arecunas and the Akawaois share a different type of dwelling.

According to GINA, support has already been solicited from various Amerindian communities in the hinterland from where materials will be drawn. Representatives from GINA and the ministry are expected to visit Moraikobai on Saturday where preparatory works are ongoing.

During a visit to Region Eight, Rodrigues met with 11 Amerindian communities, who are mainly Patamonas, to garner support for Carifesta. She also urged them to maintain their languages and other aspects of their culture.
