A post-mortem examination conducted on the remains found at Brushe Dam could not determine the cause of death but revealed other clues that could help police identify the victim.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told this newspaper yesterday that the information from the post-mortem will help guide their investigations. Details such as the age of the victim would be used to determine if he had been among any missing persons reported. Seelall said DNA testing was also an option that may be explored.

The remains were discovered in a swamp near the Buxton, East Coast Demerara area on Saturday morning. In a statement, police had said that the body appeared to be that of a male of African descent and that it had been found about 60 yards north of the Lamaha Conservancy.

The victim had been wearing a pair of three quarter, navy, denim pants with a leather belt and a Rastafarian beaded chain in red, black, green and yellow. According to the police, the beads spelt out the name ‘Ishmael’.
