Ganja boat intercepted

Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD) police on Wednesday night intercepted a boat and found 13.6 kilograms of ganja in a bag in the vessel and one man has since been held as investigations continue.

According to reports reaching this newspaper the police were on patrol in the Demerara River after 9 pm on Wednesday when they received a report regarding the vessel.

Sources told Stabroek News that acting on the information received the police went after the white and blue boat which had appeared to be coming from the East Bank Demerara and was heading towards Vriesland, WBD. The police gave chase after the boat which sped away and the ranks fired a shot in an unsuccessful bid to get the boat to stop. The boat sped on and eventually stopped at the Vriesland shore and the occupants escaped. Three females and two males were reportedly on the boat. Residents reported that vanloads of police immediately went to the area to search for the occupants of the vessel.

The police retrieved the boat, a 40 horsepower engine and a bag containing the drug. A man was later held and is in custody assisting with investigations.
