The University of Guyana is beefing up security and reinforcing the ban on the consumption of alcohol and the playing of loud music on the tarmac and its environs following the death of student, Dennis Edghill.

The administration said it believes the campus is safe but pointed out that the stabbing incident serves as a reminder that the university’s security plans need to be re-evaluated and updated.

A press release from the Public Relations Department yesterday noted that systems will also be put in place to prevent easy access to `aliens` who frequent the campus.

According to the release, Vice-Chancellor Dr James Rose is seeking the cooperation of students, parents, faculty and visitors as the university puts measures in place to beef-up security. The university administration said it was shocked to learn of the stabbing to death of one of its most promising students, Dennis Edghill, on the Turkeyen Campus on February 15.

“We feel a deep sense of loss and we grieve with his family and close friends. Dennis had dedicated his life to the service of others and it is ironic that he met his death while going to the aid of a female student who was being physically abused. The university, especially the Centre for Communication Studies, will feel the void created by his absence,” the release said.

Police continue to search for the suspect following Edghill’s death on Friday last.
