Fire at the Guyana Water Inc’s sewerage pump station at New Garden and Regent streets last Saturday brought a halt to operations at the facility, but the company is currently administering emergency repairs and the operation is expected to resume by tomorrow.

According to a GWI press release, owing to this unforeseen disruption some residents within the pumping station area may experience possible sewage overflows within their yard sewers (chambers and gullies).

This pump station serves Orange Walk to Vlissengen Road (east to west) and North Road to South Road (north to south).

Meantime, residents are asked to report any cases of sewage overflows to the company’s hotline at telephone 227-8701, 3 or 4; and GWI would respond promptly, the release stated.

GWI said that damage occurred mainly to the electrical starter and control panels in the station’s kiosk. Consequently, the pump cannot operate until the kiosk is repaired and the electrical panels are replaced.

The water company received reports about the fire around 12:30 pm last Saturday and the Guyana Fire Service which responded promptly was able to contain the flames so the facility’s concrete structure was not completely destroyed. The fire service, however, is still to determine the cause of the fire, the release added.
