A 44-year-old Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD) man was on Tuesday evening chopped to death, reportedly by a drunken acquaintance and police have detained several persons as investigations continue.
Dead is Jairam Balgobin called ‘Baker’ of Success Squatting Area, ECD. He suffered several chop wounds about his body and reports say that his throat was also slit.
On Tuesday evening he had gone to a friend’s home not far from his sister’s home, where he resided and it was there that the grisly incident occurred. Police have since held several persons including the alleged killer, the owner of the home and a relative, at whom the suspect had reportedly gone to hide.
According to reports, Balgobin, who worked part-time as a labourer and also begged in the community, had gone to the friend’s home at just about 5 pm on Tuesday.
The home is the only one on a plot of land surrounded by canals.
His sister, Hansranie Balgobin told Stabroek News that she had last seen him on Monday, when he left to go to the chicken farm, where he had worked. Relatives said that on Tuesday he had also gone to work and later that afternoon persons observed as he went to the building where he was killed.
Hansranie said that he usually went to that home when he drank. It is alleged that a close relative of the owner, who resides nearby committed the act.
The owner, who was detained by police, was reportedly not there at the time and upon returning home and seeing the body, it was he who allegedly called the police.
Relatives said that the incident occurred a few minutes before 6 pm as it was around that time that the man, who allegedly committed the act, went to the Squatting area.
A resident said that she saw the man and he had his hands wrapped up in his jersey.
He reportedly told her that he had cut his hand with glass and she said that she advised him to use his shirt to wrap it up. “He come telling me that he hand cut with a glass and me tell he foh wrap up the hand with he jersey. He hand de deh in the jersey and then he tek it out and me see he whole shirt full of blood. Me tell he ‘boy you a bleed bad’ and he seh if he hand a bleed, leff he fuh bleed to death”, the woman declared.
Neighbours said that the suspect also told a group of children, with whom he sat for a while that he had killed someone. Neighbours said that the man was intoxicated and “like he get stupid, he deh walk on the dam”.
They said that afterwards, the man left and went back towards the direction of the home where the incident occurred. Police yesterday held the suspect, who was reportedly at another relative’s home. That relative was also taken into custody.
Hansranie recalled that it was not until 11 pm on Tuesday night that she received the news. However, she said the policemen who came only told her that her brother was chopped in the shoulder and needed surgery.
She said that she did not know that he was already dead and when she asked the police whether she could go to the building, where the body was, she was reportedly told not to go and so didn’t.
