Region Three to crack down on defaulting contractors

The Region Three administration (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) has warned that it will enforce sanctions against contractors who fail to carry out works according to the bill of quantities.

Councillors expressed concern over the issue at the Regional Democratic Council’s statutory meeting last week at the regional boardroom, and the necessary action would be taken in that regard, Regional Chairman Julius Faerber said, according to a press release from the Information Department, Regional Administration Office.

Faerber said further that development works are very costly and contractors must give value for money. He also pointed to the “moral duty and responsibility” of councillors to ensure that works are carried out according to specifications.

In like manner, he noted that residents in the communities have a civic duty and a vital role to play in the development process.

Meanwhile, the administration would be meeting all contractors shortly to apprise them of what is expected from them from now on.

And in the education sector, Regional Chairman Faerber, who heads the Education Committee, said that efforts are being made to resuscitate Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) as parents have a dynamic role to play in advancing the education process.

Noting that there is a large number of unqualified teachers in the region, Faerber said that consideration would be given to those who seek to improve their educational capability.

The situation of “overcrowding” at the Wales Community High School also drew the attention of councillors, and it was reported that this issue is currently engaging the attention of the Ministry of Education while temporary arrangements are put in place to alleviate the present situation, the release added.
