Berbice students in broken bottles fight

Two Fourth Form students of the JC Chandisingh Secondary School were on Monday taken to hospital after suffering injuries sustained during a fight with broken bottles.

According to reports a 14-year-old female student, who hails from Liverpool and a 15-year-old male student were taken to the Port Mourant Hospital (PMH). The girl was immediately transferred to the New Amsterdam (NA) Hospital with injuries to her neck.

Meanwhile, the boy, of Number One Road, was treated at the PMH then escorted to the Rose Hall police outpost to await word on the girl’s condition. After the girl was discharged and the medical report proved that the “injuries were not life threatening the boy was released into the custody of his parents.”

Stabroek News understands that the fight erupted around 12.30 pm at the Rose Hall, Corentyne school. Reports are that the fight broke out after the girl, who was having lunch with the boy and four other students, became excited after hearing the news that she had topped the class in English ‘B.’

This newspaper understands that she reacted to the news by screaming and hitting the other students. But the boy became annoyed and hit her back.

She then went to the back of the school, picked up a piece of broken bottle which she used to hit the boy in his stomach.

According to reports, the boy then broke another bottle and slashed the girl on her neck and she bled profusely from the wound.

The boy also suffered cuts to his hand when he broke the bottle.

Speaking to this newspaper last evening, the girl’s father said that she had not finished her test and that she is unable to attend school. He said she visited the PMH yesterday morning for more treatment and she also had to return to the NA hospital for another x-ray.
