Apsara on at the Cultural Centre tomorrow

Apsara troupe choreographers include modern Indian dancer Lucria Rambalak, Latin dancer Marcia Akeung and classic Indian dancer Padmini Rambalak. Kiran Mattai, who is also a classic Indian dancer, is in the foreground.Apsara a fusion of classic Indian, Latin, hip-hop and other dance forms will be hosted at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) tomorrow.

According to a press release “Apsara specialises in Contemporary classical dance forms where the basics of Indian Classical dances are used as a springboard to evolve a modern and unique vocabulary.” Director-Producer Chandini Ramnarain along with a team of choreographers including Padmini Rambalak, Kiran Mattai and Marcia Akeung all of whom are classical and contemporary dancers intend to wow their audience with a production that crosses all language and geographical barriers.

Of the production, Rambalak said, “The world of dance has no barriers of language, caste, creed or sex. It is an assimilation of the right moves coupled with control over rhythm and style. But when dance meets creativity, the fusion is unimaginable and without any limits, this is what we are trying to get across in this show and I know we have succeeded.” To bring this to life Akeung said the troupe will fuse dance styles including Latin, Arabic, hip-hop, rock, as well as from old and new Bollywood films to create new dances.

Ramnarain said she is proud of her hard working team including Indira Mattai, Karishma Narwani, Reshma Ramrattan, Dominique Niamatali, Devi Robinson, Nadja Ramsaroop, Samantha Mendonca, Devon Rambalak, Omar Sattaur and Gavin Ramsoondar. The team also includes costume designer and dancer Lucria Rambalak Tickets are available at the NCC, N&S Mattai, Bhagwan’s, Anjee and Cacique Inc. The curtains will open at 7.30pm.
