Let the message of good over evil triumph – Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo has urged the nation to let the message of good over evil triumph during this period of uncertainty, in his address at the Phagwah mela and bazaar held at the Dharmic Sabha Kendra on Saturday.

The event is one of the many the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha organises to commemorate Phagwah, the celebration of the Hindu spring festival, a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said. Jagdeo urged the nation to resist those who insist on inciting fear explaining that, “there is a struggle which may take a generation to transform and restore Guyana to a period when people will have the unity of working throughout this land.” The president said too he was “disappointed in groups and organisations … that prefer to focus on the rights of criminal elements instead of meeting at the negotiating table to condemn criminals.”

At the same time, Jagdeo commended the Sabha on its continuous efforts to ensure the significance of Phagwah is understood.

Phagwah is celebrated as a symbol of the story in the Hindu scriptures of King Hyranyakashipu and his son Prahalad. The president said that the Sabha’s work has ensured that important parts of Hindu culture brought here by ancestors and shared with all Guyanese are kept alive.

According to GINA Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony, Minister of Finance Dr Ashni Singh and Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud also attended the ceremony.
