Vandals cut phone cables to 450 customers

Telephone service to some 450 GT&T customers was disrupted over the weekend when vandals cut cables at Roxanne Burnham Gardens, South Road and Bend Kirton Square, removing in one instance some 150 ft of cable.

However, service to some customers has already been restored while work is continuing in order to bring relief to customers in Roxanne Burnham Gardens.

The Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company said in a release yesterday that after reports of outages from customers in South Road, technicians found that vandals had climbed a utility pole and cut down a 100 pair cable leaving some 70 customers of South Road, between Light and Albert streets, disconnected.

Similarly, GT&T said, customers at Bend Kirton Square in West Ruimveldt and at Roxanne Burnham Gardens suffered a similar fate when a 100 and a 150 pair cable respectively were cut by vandals.

Meanwhile GT&T, in appealing for the public’s support in its fight to end vandalism, stated that in the event of a suspicious act calls can be made either to the company’s emergency hotline at 0908 or to the police at any of their emergency numbers.

GT&T said it is extremely concerned about these acts of vandalism, particularly since at two of the locations the perpetrators had to climb utility poles in full view of persons in the immediate surroundings.

The company also noted that damage to these utilities, apart from putting customers out of service, represents a threat to their security since the absence of telephone service at critical times could prove fatal.
