Georgetown Hospital probes abuse complaints against staff

The Georgetown Public Hospital said yesterday that a full investigation was conducted into allegations of physical and verbal abuse levelled against its medical staff in the emergency room and the findings will be released on Monday.
This announcement came a day after a story was aired on Prime News alleging that a woman who had gone there to seek medical attention was assaulted by a doctor. The doctor, the report said, alleged that the woman, who was in and out of consciousness following an accident, was faking her injuries.
The medical institution in a press release yesterday said that “The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) notes with grave concern, the allegations of physical and verbal abuse levelled against members of its medical staff which was aired on the Thursday, March 27th edition of Prime News”.
The release said that the allegations were made by an accident victim who was brought to the Accident and Emergency Unit (A&E) Unit on Wednesday.
“The matter involves issues which the GPHC takes seriously and an internal investigation with all parties involved, including the complainant and the doctors was conducted.
The findings of this investigation will be released in full on Monday, it added.
The reports are that Sharmaine DeMendonza went to the public hospital to seek medical attention following an accident.
While in the emergency room a doctor allegedly dug his keys into her leg, pinched her and cuffed her, all the while claiming that she was faking her condition.
She was eventually treated.
