Mahaica goldsmith robbed, cut

Gunmen on Saturday night invaded the home of a Mahaica, East Coast Demerara couple and robbed them of a quantity of cash and jewellery.

Police reported last evening that about 11 pm on Saturday goldsmith Devanand Singh, 30 years, and his wife were attacked and robbed by three armed men at their home at Helena No 2, Mahaica, ECD. The police said that investigations revealed that Singh and his wife were aroused by the sound of breaking glass and upon checking were confronted in the house by the three men who were armed with a handgun, a knife and a piece of wood. The men demanded jewellery and cash and ransacked the house. They took away a quantity of jewellery, $30,000, US$100 and two cell phones and escaped, the police said in a statement.

During the incident Singh was cut about his body with the knife and has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
