Albion woman chopped, attacker kills self

An attempted murder/suicide at Albion, Corentyne has left a woman nursing chop wounds about her body at the New Amsterdam Hospital and her attacker dead.

Reports are that Chandraram Balgobind, a 31-year-old Guyana Sugar Corporation cane harvester ambushed 45-year-old Nandranie Balkarran whom he had been pursuing for some time and dealt her two chops to her head and others about her body.

Stabroek News understands that around 8.30 pm on Sunday, at Sand Reef, the woman had just left her yard in search of her husband when Balgobind attacked her. He then dragged her back into her yard and continued “firing chops.”

Police sources said Balgobind, who lived alone a few houses from Balkarran then fled the scene and the woman was taken to hospital. Relatives went to the man’s home around 6.10 the following morning and after he did not respond to their calls they decided to check and found him hanging. His body was found in the bedroom slung from the roof with a sheet. Police arrived shortly after the discovery and the body was removed.

This newspaper understands that the man was “after her [Balkarran] for a long time” but she tried to avoid him because she was married. Reports are that the two had had problems in the past and that the police were called in to investigate.
