Man remanded over robbery attack on woman

A 34-year-old man who allegedly robbed a woman of cash and physically abused her during the incident was remanded to prison yesterday when he appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Raul Washington of 66 Joseph H Pollydore Street pleaded guilty to the charge, but requested that the court allow him to explain.

It is alleged that on April 11 Washington robbed Andrea Gordon of $10,000 cash and also used personal violence on her.
The accused told the court that the woman had continuously attacked him and on the day in question he decided that enough was enough. Washington claimed he was defending himself in a scuffle with Gordon when her money fell out. “I had to pick it up or else someone else woulda take it.” He said further, “It ain’t even look like $10,000 but I take it to the station.”

However, according to the prosecution, Washington has similar matters pending in other courts.

Washington then asked that the court place him on bail since he was expecting to get married and didn’t want to disappoint the woman because he was in jail.

Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle refused the accused bail and after listening to his explanation, she transferred the matter to Court Four for trial on April 21.
