The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) says a fibre cable was removed from its site at Harlem/ Blankenburg resulting in a disruption of service to 9,000 customers on Tuesday night.

In a press release GT&T said West Coast Demerara customers were inconvenienced for over four hours after the cable which transmits customer data and voice circuits was cut, thereby affecting telephone data and cellular service. GT&T said this latest act of vandalism follows similar occurrences in March when unknown persons damaged a section of fibre cable at Roxanne Burnham Gardens resulting in disrupted service to communities on the southern link including customers at Linden and Kwakwani.

GT&T is again appealing to public-spirited citizens to be vigilant and to help to protect its facilities. It said too these acts of vandalism can be described as a threat to security since such disruptions leave citizens vulnerable to banditry.

The company said the public should be on the lookout for any suspicious action which might lead to the disruption of service and the loss of convenience and protection.
