The appointment of a substantive Commissioner of Police is among the priority issues to be addressed by the now fully constituted Police Service Commission.
The new chairman, Dennis Morgan Mudlier, was sworn in yesterday by President Bharrat Jagdeo at his New Garden Street Office.
Morgan is no newcomer since he served as Chairman of the Commission for three years and also served as an ordinary member for 10 years.
Article 211 (1) of the Constitution states that the Commissioner of Police and every Deputy Commissioner of Police shall be appointed by the president acting after meaningful consultation with the Leader of the Opposition and Chairperson of the Police Service Commission after the chairperson has consulted with the other members of the commission.
Reporters asked Mudlier following the swearing-in ceremony about the appointment of the acting commissioner Henry Greene. He responded that besides this matter there were also other issues which demanded the commission’s attention.
“Besides promotions there are appeals from members seeking redress, acting appointments and applications for cadetship, all to be addressed. I am told there is a lot of work and so I would have to make contact with all the other members and look at these matters and then we’ll decide.”
Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee who was on hand for the swearing-in was also questioned about Greene’s appointment. Rohee responded by saying that he would like to see the commission get to work and address the appointments and backlog of matters to be dealt with at this level.
