Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai noted the development in Region One during her Independence visit at Barabina; however, she voiced concerns about the lack of youth participation in community development.

Pauline SukhaiAccording to a Government Information agency (GINA) press release Sukhai used the occasion to interact and familiarize herself with some of the region’s activities and development plans, particularly at Barabina. She was accompanied by her Liaison Officer Norman Whittaker. Sukhai met with residents at the Barabina Primary School and they informed her of their achievements in securing schools, health centre, better roads, water and electricity supply.
The minister told residents that government’s approach to Amerindian development is a more participatory and interactive one. “I would like the residents to say what their plans are to further their development. The Government is willing to work with the people to examine the plans and ensure that their requests are realized,” she added.

Region One Regional Chairman Fermin Singh who also attended the session said the administration has brought many developments to the Barabina community and the Region. He said Barabina is one of the communities that residents can emulate. However, he said too in some communities residents lack interest in community development. Singh took the opportunity to urge residents to take the responsibility seriously and to continue the development process.

Sukhai echoed his comments adding that while the ministry facilitates development it is up to the region’s authorities to ensure that developments are initiated. GINA said the minister also listened to residents’ concerns and dealt with several issues at the community level. She said closer interface is needed by the ministry and regional authorities to ensure more development.

Meanwhile, Whittaker, former Chairman of Region One, reflected on the earlier days when residents were lobbying for a school in the community.

He said the dream of the people has been realized with a school with trained teachers and incentives for the children such as hot meals and uniform assistance. The former Member of Parliament said that government is committed to Amerindian development which has accelerated very quickly.

GINA said Region One Regional Executive Officer Mary Williams also attended the meeting.
